Seedlings disinfection method for shrimp and crab nursery

In general, aquaculture species such as shrimp and crabs are particularly vulnerable during the early stages of their life cycle due to their weak immune systems. This makes them more susceptible to various pathogens, leading to higher mortality rates if not properly managed. To ensure a healthy start for these aquatic organisms, it is crucial to maintain clean breeding environments and properly disinfect seedlings. Traditionally, aquaculturists have relied on disinfectants like lime, bleach, malachite green, and formalin. However, these substances come with several drawbacks: they may leave harmful residues, be toxic to both the animals and the environment, or require large quantities to be effective. As a result, their use has become increasingly restricted. To address these concerns, we turned to a safer and more effective alternative—stabilized chlorine dioxide. Produced by Kangda Disinfectant Co., Ltd. in Xinxiang City, Henan Province, this disinfectant contains 6.6% powdered chlorine dioxide and offers excellent disinfection properties with minimal toxicity and no residual pollution. Our tests showed very promising results, making it an ideal choice for aquaculture applications. Below, we outline the specific methods for using stabilized chlorine dioxide to disinfect shrimp and crab nursery sites and seedlings: **1. Disinfection of Dry Ponds and Reproductive Equipment** - For dry ponds, dilute the stabilized chlorine dioxide to a 1:10 concentration and spray the entire area evenly. - When treating water-based ponds, mix 100 grams of the disinfectant with 30 liters of water to achieve a concentration of 3 mg/L. Spray the solution thoroughly over the pond. **2. Disinfection of Reproductive Tools and Nets** - Soak nets, fishing tools, and other equipment in a diluted solution (1:100 ratio) for 5–6 hours. This helps eliminate pathogens that could otherwise spread to the seedlings. **3. Disinfection of Broodstock and Pro-Crabs** - Either apply the diluted solution directly to the pond to reach a concentration of 0.3 mg/L, or immerse the broodstock and crabs in a container filled with 50 mg/L of the solution for 5–10 minutes. **4. Seedling Disinfection** - For shrimp and crab seedlings, prepare a solution of 0.5 mg/L and soak them for 10 minutes. - For juvenile crabs, use a stronger solution of 2.0 mg/L and soak for 15–20 minutes. **5. Regular Water Treatment** - To maintain a clean environment, periodically spray the pond with a solution of 0.2–0.3 mg/L of stabilized chlorine dioxide every 4–5 days. This helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases throughout the growing phase. By following these procedures, aquaculturists can significantly reduce disease risks while ensuring a safe and healthy environment for shrimp and crab seedlings. The use of stabilized chlorine dioxide proves to be a reliable and environmentally friendly option for modern aquaculture practices.
