Indian onion prices skyrocketed by 35 rupees a week

China Economic Net, Beijing, December 22 (Wang Hongjuan) Onion prices, one of India's main food products, have doubled last week, resulting in a surge in survival pressure for low-income groups. In order to prevent possible price increases on a larger scale, the Indian government banned onion exports on Monday and decided to increase imports.

Indian onion prices soared from Rs 35/kg to Rs 70/kg last week. Onion is one of India's main foods and plays an important role in many Indian foods. The sharp rise in onion prices has caused riots in some areas. The sharp rise in the price of onion in 1998 led to the resignation of several ministers in India. The rise in prices in 2004 even led to the resignation of the Indian government.

According to the BBC, the onion export ban will continue until January 15 next year. At present, India is stepping up imports of onions from neighboring countries and Pakistan. A customs official revealed that 13 trucks of onions imported urgently have been sent to all parts of India and will relieve the supply shortage to some extent.

The report said that the main cause of the reduction in the supply of onions in India is the high precipitation. In the western provinces of India, which had an onion-rich region in November, continued rainfall conditions caused a reduction in onion production and delayed the time to market.

A farmer named Prabhakar Bodke told the British Broadcasting Corporation: "Continuous rainfall affects the supply of onions in two ways. One is that the onion stocks are rotted by the wet weather, and the other is that some onion seeds are also affected by the dampness and affect the planting next year." He said: "I lost at least 70% of the onion stocks and half of the onion seeds were broken."
