Deka "Luke Arm"
Bionic robot arm
Even with the most advanced biomimetic prostheses, those who have lost their limbs have to work hard to use them. But the bionic prosthesis launched by Deka, a startup founded by inventor Dean Kamen, is as flexible as a real arm. The Luke Arm, named after one of the protagonists of the movie "Star Wars," is the first prosthetic limb that allows the wearer to make multiple movements at the same time. For example, you can open your palm while rotating your wrist.
“After wearing this robotic arm for 10 minutes, anyone can learn to control it to pick up items from the ground.†“Luke Arms†project manager Stewart Coulter said, “We are wearing arm-disabled people everywhere in our office.†Luke's arm's little things. In clinical trials, 90% of the 36 participants were able to do things that were previously impossible, such as unlocking with a key or eating with chopsticks." With multiple electrodes, the nerve impulses that control muscle contraction are picked up and transmitted to the central processor of the prosthesis, which then converts the signal into an actuation signal that controls the movement of the elbow, wrist and fingers. The user can accomplish these complex movements with a joystick sensor attached to the shoe.
"What the patient thinks, what this prosthetic can do," Chuck Hilreth said. He lost his arms in an accident more than 30 years ago. Since 2008, he has been testing the prototype of the "Luke Arm". The US Food and Drug Administration approved the application for the listing of this prosthesis in May 2014. As of now, Deka has not announced the time and price of the prosthesis. But Hildreth can't wait, he said that once the prosthesis is on the market, he will not hesitate to become the first user.
