Tests have shown that while tea increases blood flow velocity by increasing the contractility of the arterial wall, milk completely hinders this beneficial effect. German researchers said that this result can explain why the British tea culture has no apparent inhibitory effect on the prevalence of heart disease, because most people in the UK like to add milk to their tea.
According to the study published in the European Heart Journal, 16 women drank half a liter of freshly brewed tea, skim milk tea and boiled water. Two hours later they examined the arteries of their forearms. The results showed that the ability of the arterial vessel wall to contract black tea was significantly increased, but this effect was not evident in the group of people who had added milk.
