Rapid development of biomedical materials industry

At the 12th Five-Year Development Hotspot of the New Materials Industry recently held, Zhang Xingdong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, stated that the technology and industry of biomedical materials are at the initial stage and are constantly changing. The biomedical material market in China is now On the eve of “blowout”, the prospects are relatively broad. China is currently the third largest market for medical devices in the world. It is conservatively estimated that by 2015, it will achieve sales of US$20 billion, with an international market share of 6.2% over the same period, and related industries’ income will reach US$60 billion.

Zhang Xingdong also pointed out that in the international market, the monopoly of biomedical materials is serious, and the foreign capitalization of China's biomedical material industry is becoming increasingly fierce. Well-run companies in the industry are being purchased or controlled by foreign companies one after another, and the protection and fostering of enterprise clusters is imminent.

The industry is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises, with small scale, lack of original innovation technology and weak market competitiveness. The most important thing at present is to break through the key core technologies of basic medical devices with large demand and wide applications, while at the same time vigorously nurture and develop large-scale enterprises and enterprise clusters to form large-scale production and increase the competitiveness of the market.
