Thailand's Ministry of Health plans to regulate milk powder advertising

According to Thailand’s “World News” report on March 8th, Thai Ministry of Health spokesman Supan (7th) stated that the Ministry of Health’s Food and Drug Administration recently proposed the introduction of new milk powder regulations and regulations to strengthen management of milk powder advertisements. And continue to introduce measures to promote breast-feeding.

He pointed out that in recent years, the government has strongly advocated the effectiveness of breast-feeding, and breast-feeding infants who insisted on reaching 6 months increased from 5% in 2005 to 30% in 2009.

He said that the Ministry of Health will revise the relevant laws and regulations, and authorize the Minister of Health to have the right to prohibit companies from selling non-standard, unsafe or unnecessary foods, especially certain brands of milk powder for promotional advertising to prevent breastfeeding. Relevant departments will stipulate the extent and conditions of the prohibition of advertising promotions. It is expected that preliminary revisions will be completed in the near future.

He said that for newborn infants, breastmilk is more nutritious than any other formula. Breast milk can promote the brain development of infants, improve the intelligence level of infants, and it also has an effect on the vision of infants. He said that the brain and eyes are the basis for infants to understand the world and learn a variety of abilities. The study found that children who have breastmilk grown up within six months of birth have an average IQ of 2 to 11 points higher than those who do not eat breastmilk.

He said that since 2007, the Ministry of Health has launched the “Caring for Family Hospital” program to improve the quality of the country’s baby-raising care, taking care of childbirth, from pregnancy to childbirth, up to five years after the child’s birth.

At present, there are 899 public and private hospitals participating in the project, accounting for 85% of the total number of hospitals in the country. The 2009 assessment of the program pointed out that Thai women are more aware of the role of breastmilk in infants. The rate of breast-feeding has increased from 6% in 2005 to 30%. Of the 800,000 babies born in this five-year period, 240,000 are breastmilk. Feeding grow up.
