Turtles are temperature-sensitive animals that require precise environmental conditions and advanced care techniques. Wintering is a critical and challenging period for them, especially when it comes to maintaining their health and survival. Here are some practical and well-tested methods for successfully overwintering turtles:
1. **Hatchling Wintering**
Newly hatched turtles, or hatchlings, are extremely fragile and have limited ability to adapt to external environments. They consume a lot of energy during the long winter, making proper management essential to avoid high mortality rates. Starting from the first frost, feeding should be stopped. After the last leaf falls (around late October), hatchlings should be moved indoors into a prepared pool. The pool should be filled with clean sand, which should be rinsed with water beforehand. Once the hatchlings settle into the sand, a net cover must be placed over the pool to protect against predators. The sand should remain moist but not waterlogged. If it becomes too dry, mist it lightly with water. The water temperature difference should not exceed 2°C, and the indoor temperature must stay above 0°C to prevent freezing. To keep the hatchlings warm, straw pads can be used. Hatchlings do not eat during winter, and the density should be around 100-150 per square meter. Before the first snowfall (usually in late January), regardless of the water temperature, the wintering process must be completed.
2. **Young Turtle Wintering**
Turtles under two years old are still immature and less resistant to cold. If kept outdoors, they should be placed in a pond with a depth of over one meter, and the density should not exceed 20-30 per square meter. A layer of 10-20 cm of silt should be placed at the bottom, and a cold frame should be built over the pond. A plastic sheet should be stretched on top, with 1-2 ventilation tubes left open, and covered with straw mats for insulation. If using a cement pool, the same method as hatchlings can be applied. Since 1978, I've successfully overwintered over 5,000 baby turtles in outdoor caves. The method involves digging a 50-60 cm deep earthen pit in a sunny, sheltered area. Wooden sticks or planks are placed inside to prevent permafrost, covered with straw mats and mud. Drainage channels are dug around the pit, and 2-3 vents are left open in the sunny part to ensure good air circulation.
3. **Adult Turtle Wintering**
(1) Before winter, it's important to help turtles regain their strength after spawning. Increase their food intake with high-protein and high-fat feed, including both live and commercial feeds. Add lysine, methionine, and multi-vitamin supplements to the diet to store enough nutrients for the winter. To prevent disease, add 20-30 grams of Chinese herbs like red and blue flowers, chrysanthemum, licorice, and Banlangen to every 50 kg of feed.
(2) Choose a quiet and calm overwintering pool. The bottom should have 20 cm of silt so the turtles can burrow. Before winter, disinfect the pool by applying 100-200 grams of lime per square meter, and change the water after 8 days.
(3) Carefully select healthy turtles before wintering. Only those with normal coloration and strong bodies should be chosen. Avoid turtles that show signs of injury, slow movement, or poor health.
(4) Before the first snowfall, fill one-third of the pool with water. Keep the vegetation minimal to allow light penetration. Place straw barriers in the four corners of the tank to block sudden cold winds.
By following these methods, turtle keepers can significantly improve survival rates and ensure a healthier start to the next season.
