Turtles are temperature-sensitive animals that rely heavily on their environment to regulate body temperature, making winter a challenging period for them. Proper care during the cold season is crucial to ensure their survival. Here are some practical tips and experiences for successfully overwintering turtles:
1. **Hatchling Wintering**
Newly hatched turtles, or hatchlings, are very delicate and have low resistance to environmental changes. They need careful management during winter to avoid high mortality rates. Starting from the first frost, feeding should be stopped. After the last leaves fall (around late October), hatchlings should be moved indoors into a sand-filled pool. The sand should be clean and slightly moist. A net cover is essential to prevent predators. The sand must remain at a suitable humidity level without becoming waterlogged. If it dries out, mist it with water. The indoor temperature should stay above 0°C to avoid freezing. Straw can be used as an insulating layer. Hatchlings should not be fed during winter, and the density should be around 100–150 per square meter. Before snowfall (usually late January), regardless of the water temperature, hatchlings should end their wintering process.
2. **Young Turtle Wintering**
Turtles under two years old are still growing and not yet sexually mature. They are more sensitive to cold. If kept outdoors in natural ponds, the density should be limited to 20–30 per square meter, with water depth over 1 meter. A 10–20 cm layer of silt at the bottom helps them burrow. A wooden frame covered with plastic film and straw can provide insulation. Ventilation holes are necessary. Alternatively, earthen pits can be dug in sunny areas, filled with straw and mud, and equipped with drainage channels. This method has been successfully used since 1978 with thousands of baby turtles.
3. **Adult Turtle Wintering**
Before winter, increase the protein and fat content in their diet to help them store energy. Live food and commercial feed should be combined, and supplements like lysine, methionine, and vitamins can be added. Herbal additives such as chrysanthemum, licorice, and Banlangen can also be included to support immunity.
Choose quiet, stable pools for overwintering. The bottom should have 20 cm of silt so turtles can dig in. Disinfect the pool with lime before winter, and change the water after 8 days. Carefully select healthy turtles—avoid those with injuries, slow movement, or abnormal coloration.
Before the first snow, fill one-third of the pond area with water. Keep the vegetation light to allow sunlight. Place straw barriers in the corners to protect against sudden cold winds.
