Roche recently acquired French Trophos for 470 million euros.
Trophos is a privately held biotechnology company based in Marseille, France. Trophos has developed olesoxime and is currently investigating its role in the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy. Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disease most commonly found in children. Phase 2 clinical trials have shown that olesoxime is effective in maintaining neuromuscular function and can reduce complications.
Under the contract, Trophos shareholders will receive a prepayment of 120 million euros and an olesoxime mileage of up to 350 million US dollars.
Roland's Chief Medical Officer Sandra Horning said Roche will further develop olesoxime based on the work of Trophos and the French Muscular Dystrophy Association. The drug has the status of orphan drugs in Europe and the United States.
The recent acquisition of Roche is a new move after spending $1 billion to acquire Foundation Medicine. In addition, Roche also partnered with Meiji Pharmaceuticals of Japan and Fedora of Canada in a deal to mark the contract for $750 million in early treatment of antibiotic resistance.
