Turn Waste into Treasure – Grow Mushrooms from Sawdust!

In many areas, wood sawdust and chips accumulate in large quantities, creating significant environmental pressure. However, sawdust is actually a valuable resource that can be transformed into something highly useful with the right approach. Once properly fermented, sawdust becomes an excellent substrate for growing mushrooms. It contains approximately 58.4% carbon (C), 0.26% nitrogen (N), 0.08% hydrogen (H), and 2.6% ash. Its high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) makes it challenging for natural microbial decomposition, often requiring one to two years for full breakdown without assistance. To speed up the process, using a biotap or microbial fermentation agent can significantly improve efficiency. However, proper handling is essential, especially when adjusting the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, which is a critical factor in successful fermentation. To achieve optimal results, it's necessary to add an appropriate amount of nitrogen source—such as urea, poultry manure, or other nitrogen-rich materials—to balance the C/N ratio. Here’s how to proceed: 1. **Preparation**: Gather 2 cubic meters of sawdust, 1 bag of microbial fermentation agent, 2 kg of urea (or 50–100 kg of poultry manure), and 5 kg of rice bran. 2. **Moisture Adjustment**: Before adding water, check the moisture content of the sawdust. The ideal level should be between 60–65%. A simple way to test this is by squeezing a handful—if no water drips out and it holds its shape, it's ready. If it's too wet or too dry, it won't ferment well. Mix 2 kg of urea with enough water to create a urea solution for later use. 3. **Material Mixing**: To make the microbial agent easier to spread evenly, mix the microbial agent with about 5 kg of rice bran. This creates a more manageable mixture that can be easily distributed throughout the sawdust pile. 4. **Application**: Spread the mixed microbial agent and rice bran evenly over the sawdust. Then, pour the urea solution over the pile. Stack the sawdust into a heap and cover it with a breathable material to help maintain heat and moisture. 5. **Turning the Pile**: After 7–10 days, the temperature inside the pile should reach around 60°C. At this point, turn the pile once and let it sit for 24–36 hours at high temperature. When the temperature rises again, turn it a second time. After the second turning, leave it undisturbed for another 5–7 days. Once the temperature stabilizes below 40°C, the fermentation is complete. Under normal conditions, the process takes 25–30 days, but if you "cook" it further, it can take up to 30–45 days. By following these steps, you can transform waste wood into a valuable resource, supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing environmental impact. Growing mushrooms on fermented sawdust not only helps manage waste but also opens up new economic opportunities.
