Dutch research finds that genetic mutations cause hearing loss in the elderly ----------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on the 28th, Dutch researchers have shown that hearing loss after a middle age is associated with a specific genetic mutation.
Research shows that about 37% of people aged 61-70 in the UK and about 60% (6.5 million) of those aged 70-80 have senile hearing loss. A study of 1,200 people by the British Human Mutation Association found that subtle changes in a gene called KCNQ4 are more prevalent among patients with age-related hearing problems. The Royal Deaf Institute funded the research, which says it provides "real" hope for hearing loss.
Mutations in the KCNQ4 gene are associated with hereditary hearing loss, and hereditary hearing loss occurs sooner or later.
The University of Antwerp research team hopes to understand whether small changes in the KCNQ4 gene can also affect senile hearing loss. The research team studied 1,200 participants between the ages of 40-80. The researchers first tested the participants' hearing and then tested their DNA. The researchers found that three mutations in the gene—the difference in single nucleotides in DNA called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)—are found in the DNA of hearing-impaired patients, but This change was not found in the DNA of a normal hearing person.
They say more research is needed to determine what impact these genetic errors have on hearing. Possible explanations they have concluded include contributing to the formation of potassium in hair cells or causing it to migrate too quickly.
Dr. Ralph Holme, head of biomedical research at the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID), said: "Many people think that hearing loss is an inevitable part of the aging process, not as a potential Preventable situation. This study provides another important piece of evidence for highlighting the link between genes and senile hearing loss. At this point, we can't do anything about it. People can wear hearing aids, but this doesn't prevent their hearing loss.
