Intermittent fasting that stops several meals every few days is being sought after, but can it really lose weight? Recently, Canadian scientists discovered in animal experiments that intermittent fasting regulates the body's metabolism and promotes the conversion of white fat into brown fat, which plays a role in curbing obesity.
Adipose tissue is divided into white and brown, white fat cells are responsible for storing energy, and brown fat cells are responsible for burning fat to generate heat. Promoting browning of white fat to treat obesity and curbing diabetes is a current research hotspot.
Scientists from Canadian Children’s Hospital of Toronto and other institutions reported in a new issue of China’s “Cell Research†magazine that they fed experimental rats with two days of normal feeding and one day fasting completely. After 4 months, these rats not only weigh less than the control. The group also had less accumulation of white adipose tissue, and blood glucose and insulin levels were more stable. Further experiments show that the benefits of this method can be reflected in as little as six weeks.
The team found that intermittent fasting triggers an immune response in adipocytes that increases the production of vascular endothelial growth factor in white adipose tissue and promotes blood vessel growth, thereby activating a cell that fights inflammation—a fat tissue macrophage , stimulates the browning of white fat.
When intermittent fasting is used, there is no need to specifically limit caloric intake during the normal diet. The researchers said that this method can be used to prevent and treat obesity, metabolic disorders and so on. However, the metabolic rate, diet structure, and longevity of experimental mice are quite different from those of humans. Whether the research results are suitable for humans still needs further study.
