Make // DIY Tiny Baby Onesies

Over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself getting a little obsessed with browsing Etsy—especially when it comes to baby gear. Even though we don’t yet know the gender of our second baby, there’s just so much cuteness to discover! Luckily, we still have plenty of essentials from our firstborn, Max, so we haven’t had to buy everything from scratch. Still, I wanted to make sure our new addition would have a few unique items just for them. As I scrolled through countless listings, I came across tons of adorable onesies for those tiny newborns. Many of them were beautifully hand-painted, but each one seemed to cost at least $15. Now, I’m willing to splurge on certain things, but a onesie that might only last a few weeks and end up covered in spit-up or worse? Not quite worth it for me. That’s when I got inspired to take matters into my own hands. Using just a few supplies—a couple of brushes, some vibrant Martha Stewart fabric paints, and six white onesies I picked up at Goodwill for just $2.59—I set out to create my very own designs. These onesies were brand-new and even included a couple of organic options. I knew this project would be both budget-friendly and super fun! To start, I used painter’s tape to create clean lines and geometric shapes on some of the onesies. Painter’s tape is such a lifesaver for keeping edges sharp and precise. For another design, I grabbed a polka-dot sponge and created playful patterns in various colors—it was so easy and yielded such cute results! On the others, I went for a freestyle approach, letting my creativity flow without guidelines. Honestly, I think they turned out surprisingly well. If you’re feeling unsure, you could always lightly sketch a design with a pencil first, but where’s the fun in that? This DIY project turned out to be a perfect activity for a baby shower or even for involving older siblings. Max and I worked on these together over two afternoons, and he absolutely loved it. For his first creation, he made an abstract piece using fuchsia paint, and he was thrilled when he declared that the baby should wear the "pink one I made." I can already picture the amused reactions if the baby ends up being a boy! But the real magic was seeing how excited Max was about making something special for their new sibling. Having two kids will undoubtedly bring its own challenges, but I hope moments like these will help foster a strong bond between them. Whether it’s a pink onesie or something else entirely, I’m grateful for the joy this project brought to both of us. If you’ve ever done similar activities with your older children to prepare them for a new arrival, I’d love to hear about it! It’s all about creating those meaningful experiences that connect everyone in the family. [Your Name]
