Summer maintenance of agricultural vehicle brake system

To ensure the safe operation of agricultural vehicles during the hot season and avoid brake failure, it's essential to follow some key maintenance practices. First and foremost, avoid using alcohol-based or mineral oil-based brake fluids. Instead, always opt for high-quality synthetic brake fluid, which has a balanced reflux boiling point of at least 190°C. This type of fluid is less likely to vaporize under high temperatures, reducing the risk of "air lock" in the braking system. It also helps prevent damage to rubber components by minimizing corrosion and swelling. Next, regularly inspect and maintain the braking system. This includes checking and replacing brake fluid as needed, ensuring the brake clearance is properly adjusted to avoid unnecessary friction and overheating. Make sure all air is removed from the hydraulic system, and replace any damaged parts like brake hoses, master cylinder cups, or brake shoe linings promptly. If you notice the brake pedal feels soft while driving, stop the vehicle immediately and let it cool down in a shaded area. This can help prevent overheating of the brake drum, which could lead to serious issues. For vehicles that operate under tough conditions for extended periods, consider installing a cooling system for the brake drums, such as a water-dripping device. However, avoid pouring cold water directly onto the tires after stopping, as this can cause thermal shock and potentially crack the brake drums. Regular maintenance of the braking system is crucial. Clean the wheel brakes thoroughly to remove dust, oil, rust, and worn friction material. If the brake linings are contaminated with grease, identify and fix the source of the problem before replacing the affected parts. When repairing the brake drum, one effective method is the sulfuric acid corrosion technique. This involves soaking a piece of cotton yarn in an electrolyte solution (sulfuric acid) and wiping the surface of the brake drum. The acid helps dissolve the hardened layer, and after cleaning, use a clean cloth to wipe the surface. Then, sand the friction plate with coarse emery paper and reassemble the components according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. This process helps restore the performance and longevity of the brake system. (Li Mingcheng)
