To ensure the safe operation of agricultural vehicles during hot weather and avoid brake failure, it's essential to follow some key maintenance practices. Brakes are critical for safety, especially in high-temperature conditions, so proper care is a must.
First, always use high-quality synthetic brake fluid rather than alcohol-based or mineral oil-based types. Synthetic fluids have a balanced reflux boiling point of at least 190°C, which makes them more resistant to vapor lock under high temperatures. They also prevent damage to rubber components in the braking system by reducing corrosion and swelling.
Second, regularly inspect and maintain your braking system. This includes checking and replacing brake fluid when necessary, adjusting brake clearance properly to avoid unnecessary friction, and ensuring there is no air trapped in the hydraulic system. If you notice any damage to brake hoses, master cylinder cups, or brake shoes, replace them immediately to avoid potential failures.
Third, if you feel the brake pedal becomes soft while driving, stop the vehicle as soon as possible and move to a shaded or cool area to let the brake drum cool down. A soft pedal can be a sign of overheating or air in the system.
Fourth, if the agricultural vehicle is used under extreme conditions frequently, consider installing a cooling system for the brake drums, such as a drip-cooling device. However, avoid pouring cold water directly onto the tires after stopping, as this could cause thermal shock and lead to cracks in the brake drum.
Fifth, perform regular cleaning and maintenance on the brakes. Remove dirt, oil, rust, and debris from the wheel brakes. If the brake linings are oily, identify the source of the contamination and fix it before replacing any affected friction plates.
Lastly, when repairing the brake drum, you can use the sulfuric acid corrosion method to remove the hardened surface layer. This involves applying an electrolyte solution (a diluted sulfuric acid mixture) using cotton yarn to clean the surface. Once the surface is clean, wipe it with a new piece of cotton yarn to remove the hardened layer. Then, sand the friction plate with coarse emery cloth and reassemble the parts according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Always take necessary safety precautions when working with chemicals like sulfuric acid. (Li Mingcheng)
