Makeup Brush Care from Fresh Mommy Blog

For quite some time now, I've noticed a change in my skin, and unfortunately, it wasn't for the better. My skin felt different—more reactive, less fresh. I realized that lately, mornings had become rushed due to late nights with my eight-month-old who's been teething. I'd end up skipping steps in my skincare routine, including cleaning my makeup brushes. Honestly, I couldn’t even recall the last time I’d done it. Yikes!

My brushes were clearly overdue for a deep clean, and I knew I had to tackle that bacteria buildup. Ideally, brushes should be washed weekly, but I usually managed every two weeks, occasionally giving them a quick rinse in between. Neglecting them was taking a toll on both my skin and my makeup application. Once I got back on track, I noticed a significant improvement in how my makeup went on and how my skin felt. No more breakouts, just smooth, clean skin.

Here's a simple guide on how to properly clean and sanitize your brushes using everyday items you likely already have at home.

Makeup Brush Cleaning

  1. Grab a shallow bowl and mix a tablespoon of white vinegar (for disinfecting) with some organic dish soap (to break down stubborn product buildup—I prefer this one) or, if you're a light makeup user, opt for organic baby shampoo for a gentler cleanse. Add hot water until the mixture is sudsy. Start with your cleanest brush and swirl it gently in the soapy water, one at a time. Avoid soaking the entire handle.
  2. Rinse each brush under cold running water to remove leftover product. Ensure the water runs clear before moving on to the next step.
  3. Shake each brush gently to eliminate excess water and reshape the bristles with your fingers while they’re still damp.
  4. Never let your brushes dry standing upright, as water can seep into the glue holding the bristles together, weakening the structure. Instead, lay your brushes flat on a towel or create a makeshift drying rack using a bottle of lotion or face wash covered with a towel. Balance the brushes horizontally so the heads hang slightly lower than the handles. Allow them to air dry completely—overnight works best—or until they're ready to use again.

Don’t worry about the vinegar smell—it dissipates as the brushes dry, leaving them smelling fresh and clean. Keeping your brushes clean not only extends their lifespan but also enhances your makeup application and reduces the risk of breakouts. Your skin will thank you!
