Bauhinia

Scientific Name: Cercis chinensis

Common Name: Redbud, also known as "full of red" for its vibrant spring blooms.

Genus: Cercis

Cercis chinensis is primarily found in southern North China, East China, Central China, Southwest China, and parts of Southeast and Northwest China. It thrives in sunny locations and is moderately cold-hardy. This tree prefers fertile, well-drained soil and can tolerate slightly alkaline conditions with a pH up to 8. However, it is sensitive to earthworms. The plant is strong and resilient, making it easy to prune and shape. In urban green spaces, it typically grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights between 3 to 10 meters. Its branches are smooth and gray, with a cup-shaped or irregularly spherical crown. The leaves are alternate, heart-shaped or nearly round, and have entire margins.

The flowers are purplish-red and appear at the base of one-year-old and older branches, often in clusters of 4 to 10 or short racemes. They bloom alongside the leaves in April. After flowering, the tree produces flat seed pods that remain on the tree until the following spring. Propagation is commonly done through sowing, either in winter or early spring. Germination usually occurs within about 30 days, and when the seedlings reach around 50 cm in height, they can flower within three years. Other propagation methods include cuttings and layering.

The Chinese redbud is highly ornamental, featuring beautiful leaf shapes, dense clusters of bright flowers, and an overall attractive appearance. It is ideal for planting in lawns, along curbs, or in garden borders. It can also be combined with evergreen trees or rocks to create striking landscape compositions. There are approximately 11 species in the genus Cercis. Commonly cultivated varieties include C. racemosa, C. yunnanensis, and C. chuniana, each offering unique characteristics for different garden settings.
