During the seedling stage, tomatoes require more nitrogen to support healthy growth. However, as the first fruit begins to set, the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium increases rapidly. At this point, nitrogen makes up about 50% of the total nutrient intake, while potassium accounts for only 32%. As the harvest period approaches, the proportion of nitrogen decreases to around 36%, while potassium rises to 50%. Throughout the fruiting stage, potassium demand continues to rise steadily, with over 70% of the total potassium needed being absorbed during the fruit enlargement phase. In the late harvest period, potassium uptake slightly declines, and phosphorus absorption accounts for about 15% of the total.
Excessive nitrogen application during the growing season can lead to several issues, such as weak plant structure, excessive vegetative growth, and reduced flowering. It can also interfere with calcium absorption by the roots, leading to problems like blossom end rot and other physiological disorders that affect fruit quality.
Second, proper fertilizer application is key to maximizing yield and fruit quality. For autumn-winter tomato planting, it's best to start in mid-September, while winter tomatoes should be planted in mid to late November. Before planting, mix organic fertilizer into the soil during plowing. Apply 70–100 kg per mu of "Hongjie" vegetable-specific fertilizer. After the first fruit sets, begin top-dressing. After each fruit set, apply 20–35 kg per mu of "Hongjie" vegetable-specific fertilizer along with watering.
