In the second half of the month, proper fertilizer management becomes crucial. Most winter greenhouse cucumbers are entering their peak production phase, which means their demand for nutrients and water is gradually increasing. It's recommended to apply top-dressing by the end of February. For each acre, you can use approximately 20 kg of urea, 5 to 8 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or 30 to 35 kg of compound potassium sulfate fertilizer. Apply this once every 20 days. If needed, you can also use fully decomposed human manure or bean cake water diluted with water. Additionally, every 10 to 15 days, during disease prevention, you can spray a foliar application of 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, or a mixture of sugar, urea, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the ratio of 1:1:0.2:100. This helps improve plant health and growth.
Around the beginning of March, it’s beneficial to introduce carbon dioxide gas fertilizer. This practice can significantly reduce early plant decline, enhance stress resistance, and extend the fruiting period. As the cucumber plants enter their mid to late growth stages, watering frequency and volume should be increased accordingly. However, always adjust based on actual conditions to avoid lowering the soil temperature too much, which could negatively affect root development.
After March, as outdoor temperatures begin to rise, it's important to regulate the internal temperature of the greenhouse. Use methods like opening vents, covering with straw mats, and adjusting curtains to maintain daytime temperatures between 26°C and 30°C. Before morning exposure, keep the temperature between 12°C and 14°C to ensure optimal growth conditions for the cucumbers.
Pruning is essential to maintain an efficient plant structure. Keep the plant height around 1.3 meters, with the southern side lower and the northern side higher to maximize light exposure. The base of the cucumber stems should be pruned so that the growing point remains at about 1.3 meters. This ensures uniform growth across the entire greenhouse. Remove old and diseased leaves, and keep more than 20 healthy leaves per vine to support strong growth.
Harvesting should be done carefully. Generally, leave 2 to 3 well-developed cucumbers per plant. Stronger, healthier fruits should be left to grow longer, while weaker ones can be harvested earlier to encourage new fruit development. This approach helps maintain consistent yield and quality throughout the season.
