For Milan, flowers and trees such as honeysuckle, wax plum, sweet-scented osmanthus, camellia, azalea, and magnolia can all be propagated through cuttings. While auxins like naphthalene acetic acid are commonly used to encourage root development, there are also several simple, cost-effective techniques that gardeners can try at home.
One effective method is using potassium permanganate. Dip the base of the cutting in a 0.1% to 0.5% solution for 12 to 24 hours, then remove and let it dry slightly before planting. This helps disinfect the cutting and promotes healthy root growth.
Another technique involves using a white sugar solution. For herbaceous plants, use a 2% to 5% solution, while woody plants benefit from a stronger 5% to 10% concentration. Soak the cuttings for 24 hours, then rinse off any excess sugar with water before planting.
Vitamin B12 can also be helpful. Dilute a vitamin B12 injection with an equal amount of cold boiled water, and soak the base of the cutting for about five minutes. Allow it to dry slightly before planting.
Girdling is another useful approach. During the growing season, carefully remove a strip of bark from the base of a branch. This encourages the plant to store more nutrients near the girdled area, which can significantly improve rooting when the cutting is taken later.
When taking cuttings from plants like camellias, osmanthus, or figs, it’s beneficial to include a small portion of new growth at the base. This makes it easier for the cutting to establish roots.
To speed up the process, especially in colder months, you can increase the temperature of the propagation area. If using pots, place them on a radiator or over a heat source, but make sure to put a wooden board between the pot and the heat to prevent overheating. For better results, consider using an electric hot bed if available.
Lastly, rooting powder such as ABT can be very effective. Soak the base of the cutting in ABT solution for about 30 minutes to an hour, then plant it immediately. ABT is known to produce better results than traditional hormones like naphthaleneacetic acid or indole butyric acid, making it a popular choice among gardeners.
These methods not only save money but also offer a natural and sustainable way to propagate your favorite plants. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, experimenting with these techniques can lead to successful and healthy new plants.
