Spring and summer bananas, also known as off-season bananas, are harvested during the warmer months, typically from late spring to midsummer. This period usually spans three to five months, though it can sometimes be referred to as February through June. These bananas include varieties such as the old flower banana (snow jujube) and most new flower banana types. Due to lower temperatures in winter and early spring, banana yields tend to be lower, which makes this season a key time for banana production in China, particularly between March and May.
During this period, banana prices are higher due to limited supply, making it more profitable for farmers. Additionally, the transportation and storage of bananas become more manageable because of the stable climate. Unlike other seasons, spring and summer bananas are grown outside the typhoon season, reducing the risk of wind damage. As a result, these bananas are primarily cultivated in regions like Hainan, southern Guangdong, parts of Fujian, and Guangxi.
With the current promotion of using tube seedlings, most plantings occur in the spring, leading to an early harvest of spring and summer bananas. This contributes significantly to China’s overall banana production. However, despite their advantages, off-season bananas are still vulnerable to cold damage. A severe frost event in 1992-1993 caused widespread destruction of banana crops across major growing areas, leading to significant financial losses for many farmers.
Therefore, while spring and summer bananas offer several benefits, they are best suited for regions with milder winters. In colder areas, the risk of frost can still cause serious damage, limiting the success of this type of cultivation. Farmers must carefully consider local climate conditions when deciding on planting schedules and variety selection.
