Onion Anniversary Cultivation Technology

First, variety selection. When cultivating weeping onions for the anniversary, it's essential to choose varieties that are cold-resistant, drought-tolerant, heat-resistant, and adaptable. Opt for long-lasting, light green varieties that do not bolt easily, such as Chinese giant onions or Zhangqiu green onions. These varieties are known for their resilience and high yield in different conditions.

Second, planting schedules. (a) From January to March, sow seeds in greenhouses, and broadcast in March and May. (b) In mid-to-late March, plant small arches in flat pods, harvest in June, or transplant in mid-June and market or store them from October to November. (c) Sow seedlings in open fields in early April, transplant in mid-to-late June, and plant them in broad-leaved trees. They will overwinter and have buds removed in March to April of the following year, then harvested from April to May. (d) Sow seedlings in July to August, transplant in early September to November, and plant densely with 3 cm spacing. They will overwinter, remove buds in April of the third year, and be harvested from May to July. (e) Plant seedlings in mid-to-late September, overwinter in open fields, and harvest from March to April the next year. (f) Plant seedlings in mid-to-late September, transplant in mid-April of the following year, and harvest from July to August, or transplant again in June and harvest from October to November. (g) Sow in greenhouses from late August to early September, transplant in mid-October, and harvest from December to February the following year.

Third, management techniques. (a) Winter and spring seedbed management. Before winter, ensure young green onion seedlings have 2 to 3 leaves. Water once before freezing, then cover with a layer of fully decomposed farmyard manure to protect the roots, provide insulation, and ensure safe wintering. In spring, as temperatures rise, seedlings enter a rapid growth phase. Thin the seedlings to about 3 cm apart, and apply 2 to 3 topdressings of quick-release nitrogen fertilizer or NPK compound fertilizer, 10 to 15 kg per acre, to promote growth. This helps in harvesting small green onions for the market or cultivating strong seedlings for transplanting. (b) Summer seedbed management. During hot and rainy seasons, focus on three key defenses: pest and disease control, weed prevention, and water management. Before sowing, use 33% herbicide at 100 ml per acre and manually remove weeds 2 to 3 times. Avoid overwatering; only water when necessary, and keep the seedbed dry to prevent diseases. (c) Transplanting. Apply sufficient base fertilizer before transplanting—6,000 kg of quality manure, 30 kg of phosphate fertilizer, and 50 kg of NPK fertilizer per mu. Distribute 1/3 of the total base fertilizer in the furrow and 2/3 in the rows. Grade the seedlings before planting to avoid mixing large and small ones. For green onions, space them 60–70 cm apart with 3–4 cm between plants; for bulb onions, space them 80 cm apart with 5 cm between plants. After transplanting, cultivate the soil to loosen it, level the ridges, and remove compaction to encourage root growth. Combine watering with topdressing using NPK compound fertilizer at 30 kg per mu. Regularly cultivate the soil based on plant growth to promote healthy development and the formation of a strong, light blue color in the stems.

Fourth, soil treatment. Overcrowded planting should be avoided, as it can significantly reduce yields. If heavy planting occurs, soil treatment is necessary. (a) Increase the use of well-composted manure and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to replenish trace elements like sulfur, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and iron, which are essential for the healthy growth of Chinese green onions and to enhance disease resistance. (b) Use Greenhenge No. 1 to sterilize the soil and eliminate pathogens, ensuring a clean and fertile environment for the next crop cycle.
