Jasmine thrives in a warm, humid, and well-ventilated environment with plenty of light. It prefers a sunny spot, especially during the winter months. In southern regions, potted jasmine can be kept outdoors, while in northern areas, it should be moved indoors to a south-facing window during autumn and winter. Strong sunlight helps the plant develop strong branches, dark green leaves, and abundant, fragrant flowers. If it doesn’t receive enough light, the plant may become leggy, bloom less, and lose its fragrance.
Jasmine is not drought-tolerant but also dislikes waterlogged soil. During the rainy season, make sure to drain excess water from the pot to avoid yellowing leaves. In hot summer days, water the plant twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening. If the leaves start to curl, mist them with water to help the plant recover and continue growing.
For optimal growth, use well-draining, fertile sandy soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6 and 6.5. This type of soil encourages strong root development and vigorous growth. If the soil is too clay-heavy or lacks proper aeration, the roots won’t grow well, leading to weak stems, thin leaves, and small, sparse blooms.
During the hot midsummer growth period, apply organic compost and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers such as peanut meal, bone meal, or multi-nutrient blends. Fertilize every two weeks. However, if the plant becomes lush but fails to flower, it might be due to excessive nitrogen. In this case, reduce fertilizer and water, increase phosphorus and potassium, and ensure the plant gets enough sunlight to encourage bud formation.
Jasmine grows quickly in summer, so regular pruning is essential. For potted plants, keep the base at least 10–15 cm tall to promote strong new shoots. If the new growth becomes too dense, pinch back the tips when they reach 10 cm to encourage branching and more flowers. After flowering, remove spent blooms promptly to conserve energy and stimulate new growth, resulting in a bushier, more floriferous plant.
Pests like fruit flies, scale insects, and spider mites commonly affect jasmine from July to September. These pests feed on flower buds and can damage the plant. To control them, spray a mixture of universal powder or cypermethrin diluted 200 times every two weeks. Even if no pests are visible, regular spraying is recommended as a preventive measure. Apply the spray in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the intense midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
Avoid watering the flowers directly during the blooming period, as this can cause premature wilting and reduce the fragrance. If it rains, move potted jasmine indoors or under shelter to protect the blossoms from excessive moisture.
By following these care tips, you can enjoy a healthy, fragrant jasmine plant throughout the year. With proper light, water, soil, and maintenance, your jasmine will thrive and reward you with beautiful, scented blooms.
