International Rice Research Finds Diabetes Hypoglycemic Rice Variety

Many people believe that the rice glycemic index is not low, so it is not suitable for diabetics or high-risk groups. However, new research shows that different varieties of rice have different levels of their glycemic index. Therefore, as long as those rice varieties with lower indices are selected, these specific populations can still enjoy sweet rice without affecting their health.

The glycemic index is an indicator used to calculate carbohydrates' ability to raise blood sugar in foods, and blood sugar levels have a lot to do with diabetes. In the case of a base number of 100, foods with a score of 55 or less belong to low-glycemic index foods, between 56 and 69 to a medium level, and foods with a score of 70 or higher are high-glycemic index foods.

The International Rice Research Institute, headquartered in the Philippines' capital Manila, released research results recently. According to the results of the study, 235 rice varieties from around the world have been tested and their glycemic index ranged from 48 to 92 with an average of 64. Most rice varieties have a glycemic index of medium or low.

Researchers say that some of the rice varieties belong to low-glycemic index foods. For example, the widely grown rice variety Swarna in India. This means that people with diabetes or high-risk diabetes can maintain healthy diets by choosing the right rice variety.
