To achieve a high yield of peanuts, it's not only important to choose quality seeds, sow at the right time, and plant at an appropriate density, but also to carefully manage five critical stages during the growing season. These steps are essential for ensuring strong growth, healthy development, and ultimately, a bountiful harvest.
First, proper soil cultivation is crucial. During the early flowering stage and before applying mulch, the soil should be cultivated twice to remove weeds and improve aeration. At the same time, the soil should be loosened to a depth of about 3 cm so that the developing pods can quickly penetrate the soil, promoting better pod formation and increasing overall yield.
Second, pruning plays an important role in managing plant growth. Once the peanut plants start forming a calyx, use sharp scissors to remove diseased or non-flowering branches. It’s recommended to leave 3–4 main branches on each plant, while keeping the leaves tall and lush. For smaller branches, leave 2–3 per cluster. This helps reduce water and nutrient consumption, allowing the plants to focus their energy on producing larger, more uniform pods. In the mid to late flowering stages, applying a handful of well-rotted pig or sheep manure along with a small amount of phosphate fertilizer, and then covering with fine soil, can encourage the fruiting pegs to enter the soil more effectively, improving root nutrition and enhancing pod size and quality.
Third, foliar fertilization is an effective technique to boost productivity. During the flowering period and the subsequent pegging stage, apply 40–50 grams of ammonium molybdate per acre mixed with 50 kg of water, spraying 2–3 times. At full bloom, dissolve 100–200 grams of borax in hot water and spray 60–80 kg of the solution over the leaves. During the pod-filling and ripening phase, use a 0.2–0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution (60–70 kg per acre) for 2–3 sprays. In the later growth stages, spray 2–3% superphosphate solution (50–60 kg per acre), repeating every 7–10 days for 2–3 applications.
Fourth, managing water levels is vital. From the flowering stage onward, peanuts require consistent moisture, with the soil ideally holding up to 60% of its maximum water capacity. In dry years, irrigation should be provided to maintain optimal conditions. However, during heavy rains, drainage ditches should be dug to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot and poor pod development.
Lastly, disease prevention and control are essential. Leaf spot and rust are common issues in the middle to late stages of growth, causing yellowing and falling leaves, which can reduce pod maturity and yield. To combat leaf spot, spray 70–80 kg of 75% chlorothalonil per mu. For rust, apply 30–40 ml of 20% triadimefon EC diluted in 40 kg of water early in the infection stage.
By following these five key practices, farmers can significantly improve the health and productivity of their peanut crops, leading to higher yields and better-quality harvests.
