As the old saying goes, "Winter bamboo, spring wood." During winter, bamboo enters a dormant phase. Bamboo shoots grow at a slower pace, while the rhizomes (bamboo whip) accumulate more nutrients, making them more likely to survive after transplantation. Once the mother bamboo takes root, new shoots will begin to emerge. The weather during this season is also ideal—moderate rainfall and suitable water temperatures help the bamboo thrive.
When transplanting bamboo, it's best to choose a sheltered valley where the sun is warm and the soil is rich in nutrients. The recommended spacing is generally 6 meters by 5 meters (about 26 plants per mu), or 6 meters by 4 meters (around 27 plants per mu). This allows enough space for the bamboo to grow without overcrowding.
Select mother bamboo that is two to three years old, with a root diameter of 3–5 cm. The plant should be strong, healthy, and free from pests or diseases. The lower branches of the bamboo should align with the direction of the rhizome growth. When digging up the mother bamboo, dig about 30 cm away from the base to locate the rhizome. Then, follow the rhizome’s direction, gradually digging both near and far. After locating the rhizome, dig around it, pressing down 30 cm deep and extending up to 100 cm. Use a sharp knife to cut the rhizome roots carefully.
To ensure the survival of the transplanted bamboo, the rhizome buds must not be damaged. Each mother bamboo should be wrapped in 10–15 kg of soil to protect the roots. Handle the plant gently to avoid damaging the shoots on the rhizome or shaking off the soil. Once the planting hole is ready, fill the bottom with topsoil as much as possible. It's beneficial to create small holes in the soil and add some fertilizer before placing the mother bamboo back in its original orientation. Make sure to leave the rhizome exposed at the edge of the hole so it can grow outward easily.
After positioning the mother bamboo, continue filling the hole with topsoil, then add fresh soil in layers, compacting it gently without using a shovel to hit or press it. The planting depth should be slightly deeper than the original level, about 5–7 cm. Shape the soil into a gentle slope to prevent water accumulation. Spread some weeds around the base to reduce drought stress and protect against strong winds. Finally, set up supports to keep the bamboo upright until it becomes established.
