Spring and summer bananas, also known as off-season bananas, are harvested during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early summer. This period usually spans 3 to 5 months, and sometimes it's referred to as February through June. These bananas include varieties like the old flower banana (snow jujube) and most of the new flower types. Due to cooler temperatures in winter and early spring, the yield tends to be lower. In China, the off-season period for bananas runs from March to May, which leads to higher prices and better conditions for storage and transportation.
Additionally, the growth cycle of spring and summer bananas avoids the typhoon season, reducing the risk of wind damage. Because of these favorable conditions, this type of banana is mainly cultivated in Hainan, southern Guangdong, parts of Fujian, and Guangxi. With the current promotion of tube seedlings, most plantings occur in spring, leading to the production of spring and summer bananas. As a result, they make up a significant portion of China’s overall banana output.
However, despite their advantages, off-season bananas are still vulnerable to cold damage. A severe case occurred in 1992-1993 when two consecutive years of frost caused widespread destruction of banana crops across major growing regions. Many farmers suffered losses and struggled to remain profitable. This highlights that off-season bananas perform best in regions with milder winters, where the risk of cold damage is minimized.
