Some farmers in dryland areas have experienced poor weed control and even phytotoxicity due to the improper use of acetochlor. In response, the author recommends considering the following four key factors when applying acetochlor in such environments.
First, maintaining proper soil moisture is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of acetochlor. If dry weather persists during the application period, the herbicide's performance can significantly decrease. To counter this, it's advisable to water the soil before applying the chemical, ensuring sufficient moisture to activate the herbicide properly.
Second, the timing of application plays a vital role. Acetochlor is a selective pre-emergence herbicide, meaning it should be applied before weeds emerge from the soil after sowing. The earlier it is used, the more effective it tends to be. Once weeds are visible, acetochlor becomes largely ineffective against them.
Third, the quality of soil preparation greatly influences the herbicide’s performance. If old weeds or residues are not adequately removed before planting, they can interfere with the herbicide’s action. Additionally, uneven soil surfaces may lead to inconsistent spray coverage, further reducing its effectiveness.
Lastly, certain crops are highly sensitive to acetochlor and should not be treated with it. These include cucumber, rice, spinach, wheat, leek, millet, sorghum, and others. When using acetochlor on crops like tomatoes, corn, soybeans, and rapeseed, the dosage should be strictly controlled—typically between 50 to 75 ml per acre. Exceeding this amount can easily cause plant damage or phytotoxicity.
By following these guidelines, farmers can maximize the benefits of acetochlor while minimizing risks and ensuring safer, more effective weed control in dryland farming.
